If your clothes steamer is not giving you the smooth, crisp finish you expected, the steamer is rarely the problem. Most disappointing results come down to three small habits that are easy to fall into and just as easy to fix. We see them all the time, from creased kanduras on a workday morning to abayas that still look slept in after ten minutes of steaming. Here is what goes wrong and what to do instead.

Mistake 1: Holding the steamer too far away

What happens: the steam head hovers several centimetres from the fabric, almost like a room diffuser. A cloud of steam drifts around the garment, the room fogs up a little, and the creases stay put.

Why it matters: steam loses heat and force quickly once it leaves the head. By the time it reaches the fabric from a distance, there is not enough heat to relax the fibres. In an air-conditioned room it cools even faster.

The fix: keep the head very close to the fabric, or rest it lightly against the garment if your steamer allows it. Use your other hand to hold the hem or cuff so the fabric is gently taut. The steam then passes through the fibres instead of drifting off. The one exception is very delicate fabric such as silk or chiffon, where a little more distance is sensible.

Mistake 2: Steaming side to side

What happens: the steamer moves across the garment in a zig-zag, like painting a wall. It feels thorough, but you end up going over the same areas several times and creases seem to move around rather than disappear.

Why it matters: a hanging garment is pulled downwards by its own weight. When you steam from top to bottom, the warm, relaxed fabric drops straight as you go. Moving sideways fights against that and pushes creases from one area into the next.

The fix: use long, slow strokes from top to bottom, one section at a time. Overlap each stroke slightly. This matters most on long, flowing garments such as abayas, kanduras and maxi dresses, where gravity does a lot of the work for you.

Mistake 3: Steaming on an unstable surface

What happens: a shirt is laid on the bed, draped over a sofa arm or left half folded on a chair while you steam it.

Why it matters: steam needs fabric that can hang freely. On a soft or uneven surface, the fabric bunches as it relaxes, and you can end up setting new creases. Steaming over upholstery also pushes moisture into the furniture, which is not ideal in humid months.

The fix: always hang the garment. An upright steamer like the Fridja f1200 Clothes Steamer Pro has a built-in hanger at a good working height, which makes this automatic. If you are using a different setup, a sturdy hanger on a door hook or wardrobe rail works well. In a smaller apartment, a door hook is often the easiest spot.

A few smaller habits worth checking

  • Starting before it has heated up. Steaming too early often causes water to spit on clothes. Wait for the full warm-up time.
  • Wearing it straight away. Give the garment a few minutes on the hanger to cool and set.
  • Ignoring weaker steam. If output drops or the head starts dripping, limescale from UAE water may be building up. A quarter packet of Clothes Steamer Descaling Crystals in the f1200 sorts it out. See our descaling guide for a full schedule.

FAQs

How close should the steamer be to the fabric?

Very close, or lightly touching for most everyday fabrics. Keep a little more distance for silk, chiffon and other delicates.

Should I steam up and down or side to side?

Up and down, working from top to bottom in long strokes. It is quicker and gives a more even finish.

Can I steam clothes lying flat on the bed?

It is not recommended. Hanging the garment lets it fall straight as the steam relaxes the fibres, which gives a much smoother result.

Why is my steamer spitting water?

Usually because it has not fully heated, the hose is kinked, or limescale has built up. Check all three, and descale if the problem continues.
